Government invests more money in debt advice

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

It was recently announced that the Citizen’s Advice Bureau was set to lose a large number of its face to face debt advisors as a result of government funding cuts, which would have had a serious effect on the ability of the charity to help the many people that approach it for debt advice each year. Demand for this sort of advice has soared over the past couple of years due to the financial crisis and recession, and there were concerns that the loss of services could have a profound effect on the ability of consumers to get the advice that they needed.

However, it has now been announced that the government has found an additional £27 million that it can plough into face to face debt advice for consumers, which means that the sector can benefit from funding for another year during which more people with debt related problems can receive the help that they need.

Many people have had to seek debt advice because of their financial issues over the past couple of years, and there are many more than will be looking for help this year as a result of soaring living costs, VAT increases, job losses, and possible interest rate hikes, which may come later this year according to some industry experts.

Secretary of State for Business Vince Cable stated: “It´s vitally important that everyone has access to free debt advice, and I am pleased to announce that the Department for Business will provide the £27 million necessary to maintain the programme of face-to-face debt advice. While the Government has maintained funding for this programme, it provides only a small part of the revenue necessary to keep the Citizens Advice network fully functioning. I would like to take this opportunity to call on the other funding streams, such as from local authorities, to help provide whatever support they can to keep this excellent service going.”

Bogus companies offering personal loans

Friday, June 18th, 2010

According to recent reports there has been an increase in the number of companies that are offering fake personal loans in the UK, and those being targeted by the bogus companies are people that would most likely be unable to get a traditional loan and are therefore more vulnerable or high risk. Officials are warning consumers to be on the lookout for suspicious loan companies and offers.

In the current economic and financial climate many consumers are more likely to fall victim to these bogus companies, as many will be after a financial lifeline, which they believe that these companies may be offering. Officials have warned consumers to look out for companies that target people through cold calling or via the internet or text messaging, as these are more likely to be the bogus ones.

The warning was issued by officials from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, and there are concerns that people that are unable to get finance from mainstream lenders may easily fall for these scams in the hope of being able to get finance. However, many of these companies are charging upfront fees to customers to get them a loan, and then the loan never actually comes to fruition.

One official from the CAB said that many of these companies were targeting more vulnerable people, as they knew that they would be more likely to fall for the scam. She said that people needed to be careful of companies that carried out cold calling, emails, and SMS messaging, and direct mail campaigns in order to get people to take out a loan.

Consumers that are looking for a loan should always check the credentials and reputation of a company before making any commitment, and should always exercise caution if asked to pay an upfront fee.

Experts give opinions on FSA mortgage lending regulation changes

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

The mortgage markets have been turbulent to say the least over the past couple of years, and many of the problems that have almost brought the financial sector to its knees have been blamed on irresponsible mortgage lenders over the past decade, where high income multiples, extended repayment periods, lending to those with bad credit, jumbo mortgages, and high risk lending was all part and parcel of the mortgage lending sector.
