Is life insurance worth it?

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

In a time of economic uncertainty, looking at our personal budgets, our monthly outgoings and where we can cut down our spending is a good habit to pick up. After shuffling around the credit card balances for a better rate, and looking at how much is spent on luxury items, insurances are among the first expenditure items to be cut back for the majority of households.

Which insurances are worth the monthly expenditure?

Throughout daily life, adults can pick up a portfolio of many different types of insurance. Often insurance is offered as an add on sale to gadgets and household items. In the excitement of purchasing a new gadget for the home, it’s easy to get swept up with the sales patter and see a need to sign up to monthly protection for your items.

The same is true when purchasing or upgrading a new mobile phone. Although the new smart phones are materially worth a lot of money, many of them are offered free on new contracts, yet we are still encouraged to insure our phones for monthly amounts that over the span of a year would add up to enough to purchase a new handset anyway. It’s insurances like these that it is easy to live without and to justify putting an end to the policy.

However, it pays not to be too frivolous with the cutbacks if we are consider monthly payments on policies such as mortgage life insurance.

Why is life insurance important?

When looking at the benefits of life insurance versus the cost, we should remember that paying out for life insurance is an unselfish act. The way that you personally would benefit from life insurance, or critical illness cover, would be to have peace of mind that should anything happen to you, your loved ones would be provided for in the first instance. It is of course your loved ones that would benefit from your life insurance long term.

Balancing the monthly cost of life insurance against the benefits.

The average life insurance quotes vary depending on the type and level of cover that you might require. If you are feeling that your life insurance costs are a little too much to justify in your monthly budget, before you decide to scrap this valuable cover, consider getting some new quotes. If your situation has changed medically, financially or family wise, you may find that you can decrease your current monthly payments with a new policy.

Life insurance looks out for your loved ones.

In summary, life insurance is worth it. Your loved ones will be grateful that you chose to make a small monthly sacrifice to protect them when you are gone.

Many consumers in debt to energy firms

Monday, March 14th, 2011

As most people are aware the personal debt issue in the UK has spiralled out of control, with many people that have accrued debts such as credit cards, loans, and other forms of personal debt. However, it has recently been revealed that many also owe a lot of money to energy firms, with the soaring costing of energy leaving many unable to afford their bills.

The rising cost of living in general, along with factors such as a cut in income or welfare, job losses, and increasing outgoings, has left many people struggling to keep on top of their bills. Energy prices in particular have soared and with the last couple of winters having been so bitterly cold this has resulted in a rising number of people being unable to pay their bills.

It has been revealed that many people are now in debt to energy firms, with a total of £624 million owed to these firms. It is thought that the average amount owed by households is around £126 each. The data comes from the comparison site uswitch.com. Nearly 40 percent of energy customers said that they owed more to their energy firm now compared to last year. Just 14 percent said that they owed less compared to last year.

One uswitch official said: “Energy debt can be a catch-22. Despite knowing they could reduce their bills by moving to a cheaper energy plan, consumers can see debt as a barrier to switching. However, our research shows that while the average debt is £126, consumers could save up to £458 by switching. So while they may have to pay any outstanding debt to switch, by cutting the cost of their energy they could avoid falling back in to debt in the future.”

Survey reveals debt worries amongst consumers

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Many people are in debt these days, with personal debt levels amongst some households having increased as a result of the global financial crisis and recession, which has left many people strapped for cash. However, there are concerns amongst a large number of people with regards to how they will repay their debt and whether they will ever be free of it.

According to the survey nine out of ten people have run up unsecured debts, and many of these are concerned over whether they will be able to pay back the debt. Around 89 percent of consumers aged between 18 and 35 had debts that they had run up in the form of loans, overdrafts, and credit cards, and a third said that they did not think that they would ever be free of the debt.

The survey also showed that 54 percent of consumers would have to continue borrowing money in order to fund the lifestyle that they wanted. Another 20 percent of consumers said that they were not worried about their loved ones having to cope with their debt in the event that they died before the debt had been repaid. A massive 80 percent of consumers said that even in the current climate it was still too easy to borrow money on credit cards and through banks in the form of loans.

One industry expert said: “The majority of UK adults owe money in some way, shape or form, but to see that almost a third think they’ll never be free from debt is quite alarming. When borrowing money from any source, how you are going to repay it should always be in the back of your mind. A lot of people don’t really think about the consequences of borrowing money and it can be easy to get complacent, but keeping it all under control should be a priority from the off. Only borrow what you really think you can afford to pay back.”
